Jackson Rescues

Katrina survivors, available for Adoption

All of these animals come from Gulfport, Mississippi - they are among a handful that survived a 30 foot surge of water, as well as it's aftermath, to be plucked up by rescuers. A recent SOS came out from another rescue group - that Gulfport had many strays, hiding beneath ruined houses that were about to be demolished. ARF mobilized volunteers to go down to Gulfport and retrieve as many as possible.

Destin

Such a beauty girl! Destin is actually a Katrina survivor from Waveland, not Gulfport.

There is no delicate way to say this - the shelter she was rescued from was BAD. Ok? Just BAD. She and the other dogs were literally up to their necks in water when the rescue arrived. The rescue had to fight the shelter manager because this person thought they'd all be better off drowned.

She's just gorgeous - she's a healthy, busy, protective girl who needs a family.

Sparky
Sparky came to us from the coast. We don't know his history, but we do know he is a loving young boy (about a year, not quite). He has loads of kisses to give to anyone who will stop to pet and hold him.

When time permits, one of his favorite things to do is to have a person sit in his pen next to his bed and let him curl up in your lap and scratch his head. he would do that all day, if someone had the time.

He also likes all the dogs that come to the shelter and wants t o be everybody's friend. If a dog wants his toy, he gladly gives it, just ask. He is a very giving little boy.

He also is meticulous about his pen. He has no accidents and wants his toys picked up and put in his bed when he finishes playing with them.

He obeys commands and probably could be easily house trained.

Tonka is a very energetic Bassett hound lab mix. He is less than a year old, neutered and had all his shots.

He is full of energy, loves people, a bit scared of men at first, but warms up to you very fast. He isn't scared of women, but he needs some obedience training because he has no idea of his strength and is a big ole energetic baby. He does not like male dogs and should be an only child dog.

Cupcake - a female Chow mix

We love Cupcake! She is a party girl. loves EVERYBODY and is always ready to play. she is house trained and very smart. Her playmate is Fufu. Fufu is another party girl. The two of these girls together is just one big game of play. They gleefully run up to all the other pens of dogs and say HI to the dogs.

Lil Joe - Lil Joe, a male Collie / Boxer / Bulldog / Who knows Mix

Lil Joe is a hurricane refugee and has been with us for over a year.

He is a loving, beautiful dog who will never mess up his pen. We therefore think he is house trained and would make a great indoor pet. He does like to go out into a fenced yard to run and play, but doesn't like to be left alone outside for long periods of time. Being that he went through the hurricane outside, we assume he has some stress issues from that. He also gets scared in thunder storms and could use some companionship if possible when storms come along.

He is particular about other dogs, some he loves, and some he DOESN'T. If he goes into a family with other dogs, we would need to see if they meet his approval.

His best friend is Pete the Beagle - they share a pen and play hard for hours on end.

Gulfport #12 - Bandit - a male Boarder Collie, and Baby's best friend. He's very, very skinny right now.
