Local Jackson rescues, available for Adoption
Eli - added 4/25/07
Eli is a Pit-Lab mix, solid black and sweet as can be. See how photogenic he
is? He played a little hide-and-seek for his photo shoot too. He is
pretty shy when you first meet him, but he will warm up to you slowly.
He gets along with other dogs and needs a secure yard because he can be a fence-climber.
Puppies! - added 4/25/07
These four brown mix-breed pups were rescued and brought to ARF recently. They
are cute, wiggly, and very much ready to be placed in forever homes!
Mia - added 4/25/07
Mia is a one-year-old Border Collie/Australian Shepherd mix. Spayed and healthy,
she is very friendly, great with children, and even gets along with cats. She is an
escape artist and needs a secure fence for her time outside. She does best when
there are other dogs that will play with her. Her escapes were likely because of
boredom – Border Collies are very smart dogs and need to be occupied and not left
alone for long periods of time, but if she has playmates in the yard she should be fine.
Puppies - added 4/3/07
I haven't been given any details about these guys, so please contact
ARF for information. Obviously, there are four of them, and they are
adorable!
Annie - added 4/3/07
Annie is a fun-loving, independent girl looking for lots of love and
attention. She likes to tease other dogs at times, but it's all
good-natured. She is an alpha, but will relinquish her rank if another
alpha dog comes along.
Newman - added 4/3/07
Newman, unlike his Seinfeld-character namesake, is a bit on the shy
side until he gets to know you. He loves lots of hugs and kisses. He
likes to be around other dogs as long as they can play well together,
or he would be content being the only child.
Roof top puppies
These are the four pups that were rescued off the roof of a dorm, at a local
Jackson community college. Some complete and utter LOSER placed them in
a box, put them on the roof of the building, and LEFT THEM THERE TO DIE.
Thankfully they were rescued by someone and taken to the vet tech school,
who called ARF.
Please give them a home!
Puuuppppies!
Meet Helen's pups! There are four total, and they are adorable!
Rufus
Ruuuufus, duuuude.... We get it, little
man - you went through hell and back. You were rescued from Waveland, MS
in totally scary circumstances. We know you don't like other male dogs at
all, and that you need an understanding person who can handle your strong
little self.
But look at you, man! You nuthin but a hound dog; you
love to lie in the dirt and watch the cows in the pasture across from the
play yard.
It's cool now, bra. You are safe and happy, and it's all
good.
Trixie
Trixie is Dixies sister, but was not
fortunate enough to get all the freckles.
She is also a timid girl
who was rescued out of some pretty dire circumstances. She is a bit braver
at introduction than her sister Dixie, but still needs understanding
gentleness. After she becomes accustomed to her surroundings she is a
happy bundle of joy. She is prone to escape a chain link fence, so a
secure environment is a must.
Both Trixie and Dixie need
companionship of another dog and seem to get along well with all they have
met thus far. They both really like the boys, even though they have been
spayed, they still like to flirt
Dixie
Dixie is
a hurricane rescue dog recently up from Waveland MS. She has had a hard
time of it on the coast and subsequently in the place where she was
rescued prior to joining us at ARF.
She is timid upon introduction,
but after she gets accustomed to you and her surroundings she is a loving
happy girl who wants and needs love and kindness. Dixie is a pleaser and
would make a great dog for a home with children who will play with her
regularly.
She is not a year old yet, but appears to be full grown
at around 45 pounds.
Curly
Curley is an older cocker spaniel. He
appears to be around 9, however he is as spry as the young pups. When he
gets to go to the outside for his exercise time, he will run and jump and
flip about as if he were a puppy again. He loves loves loves attention and
affection, and will stand on his hind legs and wrap his front paws around
your leg and place his head against your leg giving you a very firm and
resounding HUG. He will hold it as long as you let him. He is starved for
affection and the creature comforts of home.
He could care less
about if he has other dogs in the house or not. Curly just cares about
people.
Penny
Penny is
a cattle dog and appears to be about 9 months old as of September.
She is an alpha dog, but loves other dogs. She is in a large play
group in the play yards and will run and romp and herd them all day long.
She is an energetic dog and is very affectionate. She loves brushing
although she doesn't shed much. Her pen mate does shed and when he gets
his grooming, she is very emphatic about getting brushed as well. A girl
has got to have good hair don't ya know.
She would do best in a
home with another dog and with a family who has time to work her energy
off. She has a large group of play yard mates and seems to be able to get
along with all dogs. She would do best with another dog rather than as an
only dog.
Ghingas
Ghingas is another of Ruby's babies, a
brindle pup with lots of energy. He is a funny boy who loves to run
circles around the shetler, and is a silly boy who seems to be a jokster.
He is an alpha and is a strong willed and wiggly boy. He can get away from
you very quickly and needs a secure area for home.
Thelma and Louise
Thelma and Louise are ruby's children. Ruby is a Red
Heeler, but Thelma and Louise have no freckles. They are both blonde
chicks in every meaning of the term. They are playful and fun happy girls
who so enjoy running past all the boys and making them jump and
bark.
Raz
Raz is the
sister of Taz but doesn't have the floppy ears.
She is a brindle
girl daughter of a Red Heeler (Ruby). She was born in January of
06.
Raz is not an alpha dog and will readily give in to the control
of other alphas. She is loving and a pleaser and will go out of her way to
be sure all parties are happy. If the other dogs get into a discussion
about a toy or pen dispute, she will go around and give the other dogs
kisses in what appears to be trying to get everyone happy.
She is
laid back and can be happy with either running and playing or lying about
the house.
Taz
Taz is a single brindle lab mix. He is the
playmate of River and they are a PAIR. They romp and play all day long.
Then when they are all worn out, the two will lie side by side and quietly
talk about all the other dogs, or perhaps what they will do tomorrow to
make us laugh. Taz was born in January to Ruby and is one of her favorite
boys.
He is sweet to all dogs, but has his favorites.
Guy
Guy is
approximately 9 months old and is one happy boy. He is an alpha boy and
will happily lead his pack to the yard to run and jump. He is full of
energy and needs lots of exercise.
All american labs (whether full
blooded or mixes) are energy machines and need plenty of exercise - you
know you are in for a fun ride when the only pictures anybody can get of
Fred is at a full run! At around three years of age they will calm down
and not need as much exercise unless you just want to.
Fred
SBNM (single, black, neutered, male). He is approximately 9 months old and
loves to run and romp. He's a parvo survivor and is up to date on all his
shots. Fred loves to give hugs and will follow directions with
glee.
Ruby
SSRF (single spayed red female) Once a party girl out on the town, now a
homebody ready to settle down. No longer wanting to have pups, wishing to
be a loving companion to anyone who will provide a safe loving commitment.
Loves to sit and look longingly into your eyes, listen while you talk
about your day, will never question your opinions, have no political
agenda nor vices. Will sleep at your feet with you in bed or on a soft
blanket at your side.
Loves long walks, romping in a fenced yard or
quietly playing with a toy while you deal with your business. Will wait
for you while you are away with loving patience and never question you
when you stay out late at night.
Petey
SBNM (single, black, neutered male). Looking for love in all the wrong places.
Found in a questionable part of town, but now roaming no more. Will commit
to a one family home and will provide constant companionship. Loves
children, women and men. Loves to be loved and rubbed and
tickled.
Desires a family or single person to give unconditional
love and affection. Will await your every command with gentle quiet joy.
If you want to play, I will play with unbridled joy. If you want to sit
quietly by the fireplace or television, I will gladly be there for
you.
I get along well with other dogs and cats, I try to be house
trained, however after a lengthy stay in the shelter, I may need a bit of
help remembering. I love clean blankets, cookies and loads of love.
Long walks on a leash, playing in a fence yard providing safe
security are a must. Please respond with your whole heart.
Roscoe
SRNM (single, red, neutered male) looking for companionship, long walks on a
leash, long periods of chasing tennis balls and Kong toys. Loves eating
doggie cookies while getting tickles on the back of the head.
Will love with unconditional abandon, will await your return from work with
patient quietness. Would love to live in a home with opportunity to go out
into a safe secure fenced yard, or stay in the comfort of heating/cooling
and a soft blankie. House trained and loving.
Bootsie
Bootsie is a lab mixed with who knows
what. Perhaps Border Collie, perhaps Boxer; we have no idea. She is very
energetic, loves to run and herd and loves to ESCAPE. She can get out of a
chain link pen in 6.7 seconds flat. She needs someone who can give her
time to work off her energy and a SECURE environment. She is very loving
and doesn't like confrontation. She wants loads off love and gets wiggly
if she doesn't get her daily petting and love. She was born in the
beginning of the year and appears to be about 9 months old as of
september.
Bootsie has a large group of play yard mates and seems
to be able to get along with all dogs. She would do best with another dog
rather than as an only dog
Gumby
Gumby has turned into quite the jokester.
He is always teasing his pen mates and doing many silly silly things. He
seems to know how silly he is because whenever he does one of his antics,
he looks at us and grins real big. He's very playful and full of energy.
His mother was a red heeler and his daddy was either a beagle or a lab, we
don't know. I know that is strange, but truly it is hard to tell. He does
like to bark, but his barking is definitely him telling whomever he is
barking to something VERY VERY important. Sometimes he lies on his back
with his legs up in the air kicking while he barks.
River
This baby was rescued from the back side
of the levee at the pearl river. Naturally, he was very scared and timid
at the time, but he has come a long way in a very few weeks. He is the pen
mate of Fred whom he loves and adores. Fred helped bring him out of his
shell and now River is a loving playful boy, learning about toys and
cookies.
Sunny Boy (A last chance Briarwood dog!)
You can't look at this dog and not think about what a
gift a pet is. This animal requires your time, attention, and love - and
in return, you get that back, times about a million or so. All you have to
do to get a best friend for life is show up.
Rocky (before and after)
This is what a homeless dog looks like,
folks. Rocky was found near death on the streets of Jackson. Emaciated,
sick, filthy, matted and frightened. We really didn't think he'd make it,
but he's made of tougher stuff than that. So tough that when he was truly
starving, just to kill that hungry sensation, he ate rocks.
The vet removed several of them, treated him for the damage time on the streets
does, and now here he is. We can't get a great picture of him yet, because
honestly he looks like a skinny mongoose (with no disrespect towards
mongeese) with a very waggly tail - no longer a starving lion. Plus, he's
always eating.
He's lovely - I don't care what the picture says.
Yeah, he's skinny, but not nearly as much as when ARF first brought him
in. The coat will grow back - Pippa figures he's a chow mix, so he's got
some big time fur coat due him. Healthy and gorgeous. He's just lovely -
he wants to love, lean on you (the canine hug), and play. I don't know who
ever turned this wonderful boy out to fend for himself, and you reallllly
don't want to hear what I have to say about that person.
We are really hoping there's someone else out there who wants to participate in
Rocky's newfound joy of life. Maybe, give him a new name,
too.
Update - Look at Rocky now! The after picture just proves what
a handsome boy he really is.
Wells
Wells is close to our hearts, having been found in such
horrible condition. He has begun heartworm treatment and is responding
well to it. He needs to eat some pie and gain some weight, we think he
will gain after the heartworm treatment begins. However, he looks 100%
better than he did when he was rescued off the streets of West
Jackson.
Wells loves any attention he is given. If you pet him or
rub his cheek, he will lean up against you as if he is giving you a hug.
We aren't sure if the cattywhompaus neck is going to straighten
out. it bothers people more than it bothers Wells. The vet is still trying
to get that medical issue better.
Katrina survivors from Gulfport, MS, available for Adoption
All of these animals come from Gulfport, Mississippi - they are among a handful
that survived a 30 foot surge of water, as well as it's aftermath, to be
plucked up by rescuers. A recent SOS came out from another rescue group -
that Gulfport had many strays, hiding beneath ruined houses that were
about to be demolished. ARF mobilized volunteers to go down to
Gulfport and retrieve as many as possible.
Destin
Such a beauty girl! Destin is actually a
Katrina survivor from Waveland, not Gulfport.
There is no delicate
way to say this - the shelter she was rescued from was BAD. Ok? Just BAD.
She and the other dogs were literally up to their necks in water when the
rescue arrived. The rescue had to fight the shelter manager because this
person thought they'd all be better off drowned.
She's just gorgeous - she's a healthy, busy, protective girl who needs a
family.
Sparky
Sparky came to us
from the coast. We don't know his history, but we do know he is a loving
young boy (about a year, not quite). He has loads of kisses to give to
anyone who will stop to pet and hold him.
When time permits, one
of his favorite things to do is to have a person sit in his pen next to
his bed and let him curl up in your lap and scratch his head. he would do
that all day, if someone had the time.
He also likes all the dogs
that come to the shelter and wants t o be everybody's friend. If a dog
wants his toy, he gladly gives it, just ask. He is a very giving little
boy.
He also is meticulous about his pen. He has no accidents and
wants his toys picked up and put in his bed when he finishes playing with
them.
He obeys commands and probably could be easily house trained.
Tonka is a very energetic
Bassett hound lab mix. He is less than a year old, neutered and had all
his shots.
He is full of energy, loves people, a bit scared of men
at first, but warms up to you very fast. He isn't scared of women, but he
needs some obedience training because he has no idea of his strength and
is a big ole energetic baby. He does not like male dogs and should be an
only child dog.
Cupcake - a female Chow mix
We love Cupcake! She is a party girl. loves EVERYBODY and
is always ready to play. she is house trained and very smart. Her playmate
is Fufu. Fufu is another party girl. The two of these girls together is
just one big game of play. They gleefully run up to all the other pens of
dogs and say HI to the dogs.
Lil Joe - Lil Joe, a male Collie / Boxer / Bulldog / Who knows Mix
Lil Joe is a hurricane
refugee and has been with us for over a year.
He is a loving,
beautiful dog who will never mess up his pen. We therefore think he is
house trained and would make a great indoor pet. He does like to go out
into a fenced yard to run and play, but doesn't like to be left alone
outside for long periods of time. Being that he went through the hurricane
outside, we assume he has some stress issues from that. He also gets
scared in thunder storms and could use some companionship if possible when
storms come along.
He is particular about other dogs, some he
loves, and some he DOESN'T. If he goes into a family with other dogs, we
would need to see if they meet his approval.
His best friend is
Pete the Beagle - they share a pen and play hard for hours on
end.
Bandit - male Boarder Collie, and
Baby's best friend. He's very, very skinny right now.
